Abstract

Obesity in the adult population constitutes a highly complex public health problem, associated with severe comorbidities and a growing economic and social burden. This study conducted an exploratory literature review of scientific literature published between 2015 and 2024, with the aim of analyzing the main challenges in the treatment of this condition. The results identify important limitations in behavioral interventions, highlighting the high dropout rate, the lack of therapeutic personalization and the difficulties in maintaining the lost weight in the long term. In addition, structural, economic and cultural barriers to access to pharmacological and surgical treatments are evident, such as high costs, low coverage in health systems, medical stigmatization and lack of adequate clinical follow-up. It is concluded that the effective management of obesity requires a transformation of the current models towards comprehensive, interdisciplinary and patient-centered approaches, accompanied by inclusive and sustainable public policies.
