Relationship between mental health and the incidence of metabolic diseases

Abstract

This study analyzes the bidirectional interrelationship between mental health and metabolic diseases, showing a convergence of pathophysiological, behavioral and social factors. Through a systematic literature review in international scientific databases, we examined research published between 2010 and 2024 that addresses this issue from interdisciplinary approaches. The findings indicate that disorders such as depression and anxiety increase the risk of suffering from metabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and vice versa. Common mechanisms such as chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, low-grade systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, and alterations in neurotransmission and epigenetics are identified. These elements support an integrative model that requires a joint clinical approach, overcoming the fragmentation between physical and mental health. It is concluded that simultaneous treatment is necessary to improve clinical prognosis and promote preventive strategies in public health.
