Impact of Gamification on Academic Performance and Intrinsic Motivation in High School Students

Abstract

Gamification has emerged as an innovative pedagogical strategy to enhance intrinsic motivation and academic performance in secondary and high school education. This study aimed to analyze the effects of gamification on learning through a systematic documentary review of 20 research studies published between 2021 and 2025, following the PRISMA framework. The findings reveal that incorporating game-based elements—such as points, badges, levels, and immediate feedback—significantly increases student engagement, autonomy, and self-regulation. Moreover, gamified environments foster meaningful learning and academic satisfaction when aligned with clear educational objectives and coherent instructional design. It is concluded that properly implemented gamification transforms traditional educational practices, promotes sustained motivation, and strengthens students’ cognitive and socioemotional competencies.
